Under the theme ‘Urban Reshaping’, professors and students from the Department of Industrial Design at the University of Cincinnati in the U.S. focused on the transformation of cities and the reconfiguration of mobility that goes along with this development. To bring the conceptual tyre and HPS-Cell platform to life, a concept film and a prototype were produced, illustrating how an urban population in 2040 may use this kind of mobility platform.

The HPS-Cell runs on an airless tyre and uses sensor technology that identifies tyre treads and road conditions in real-time, as well as responding to wear-out risks and changes tread patterns according to the road condition, using variable wheels and optimised infrastructure.

The red front tyres in particular are reminiscent of the Opel Motorbike Motoclub 500 unveiled in 1928 that are an essential visual component of the study forming the beginning of the striking red signature line which highlights the contour of the GT Concept and makes it distinctive, resembling that of a pictogram.

Design and structure of the concept tyres are similar to regular road tyres despite the red and black colour differences, they both provide an identical construction. Referencing sizing of the concept tyres, they correspond approximately to the conventional tyre size 225/40R18.

The tyre sidewall and tread design follows the seamless curves and futuristic look of the GT body reflecting the dynamic flowing shapes of the study. Its sophisticated door mechanism permits a pleasing view of the tyres especially adapted tread design including the incorporated GT logos.

The DynaMIX’s three-dimensional tread pattern excels in tough off-road conditions. The texture and design of particular tread blocks in the pattern have been tailored to maximise overall performance. The glitter surface of the tyre is polished, which enhances handling and wet performance, while at the same time promoting greater control at faster speeds. And finally, the geometric sidewalls integrate Hankook’s wet-tech holes, enabling the sidewalls to achieve greater flexibility and disperse shocks.

Alpike is designed with tyre circumferential expansion mode, which increases vehicle ground clearance and therefore makes it optimally suitable for heavy snow. Also, the studs and gaps in tread created from tire circumferential expansion enhance the traction on snowy and icy roads.
